9th September 2004 – All 17 McDonald’s restaurants in Slovenia have joined the points of sale where Mobitel GSM/UMTS subscribers, Debitel subscribers, and the users of Nova KBM bank are able to pay by using their mobile phones; the Moneta mobile payment system is now operating at 2,290 points of sale around Slovenia.

“Mobitel, if I may use the Slovenian generic word for a mobile phone, has become a universal facility, more and more useful in new spheres of life. The fact that it is possible to buy a hamburger with a mobile phone speaks about the inevitable penetration of mobile telecommunications into spheres not yet imaginable a few years ago. Moneta is thus becoming an increasingly widely spread means of payment,” explains Anton Majzelj, the Managing Director of Mobitel company.

On 1st July of this year Mobitel and McDonald’s have introduced a pilot system of mobile payment Moneta in two McDonald’s restaurants in Ljubljana. Following the successful testing of the system, the two companies have decided to introduce the possibility of mobile payment in all 17 McDonald’s restaurants in Slovenia in September.

"Nowadays people are more frequently using non-cash forms of payment, and McDonald’s is trying to follow this trend. That is why we have introduced for our customers the posibility of mobile payment in all our restaurants in Slovenia,” says Alexander Sgustav, the Managing Director of McDonald's Slovenija, d.o.o. “I am also proud of the fact that McDonald's Slovenia is the first company in the world to introduce the possibility of paying via mobile phones in McDonald’s restaurants,” adds Sgustav.

Moneta is a system for safe, simple and transparent non-cash payment by means of mobile phone. The service includes paying with Moneta on the Internet, by ATM machines, terminals, on portal Planet and via M-ticket. The first steps of mobile payment at Mobitel were made already in the summer 2001 by making payment with Moneta possible on the Internet. In May 2002 paying with Moneta by cash machines was added, while purchasing and reservation of tickets was introduced in the autumn. In August of 2003 shopping on Mobitel’s multimedia portal Planet through Moneta terminals was introduced.

Moneta mobile payment is now available at 2,290 sale points around Slovenia, while the number is growing every day. So far Moneta has been used by 90,000 Mobitel subscribers having carried out over 600,000 transactions.


Mobitel GSM/UMTS subscribers and the subscribers of Debitel, mobile telecommunications service provider using Mobitel’s network, cover the costs as a part of a joint monthly bill for mobile telecommunications services, which includes payment specification. Holders of the accounts at Nova KBM bank, Mobitel’s partner in providing the Moneta services, cover the costs directly from their transaction accounts.
