Moneta – Now Also as a Payment Card

22.07.2004

22 June 2004 - Nova KBM, Mobitel and M-Pay presented the new generation of Moneta service today in Maribor along with its refreshed corporate image. Nova KBM became the first bank in the region which decided to offer this type of service of mobile payments to its clients, while Mobitel strengthened its position as the first as well as the only provider of mobile payment services in Slovenia. Nova KBM and Mobitel have thereby also assumed their position as one of the Europe’s leading providers of mobile payment services.

Moneta is a system that provides secure, simple, and transparent cash-free payments by the mobile phone. Mobile payment service includes payments with Moneta via the Internet, vending machines, terminals, on Planet, and via M-vstopnica (M-ticket) service. The first steps in mobile payments were taken by Mobitel in the summer of 2001, as the company enabled payments using the Moneta service via the Internet. In May 2002 it was complemented by Moneta payments at vending machines, in autumn same year the Company introduced ticket purchasing and booking, while finally in August 2003 users were also able to make purchases via Moneta terminals and on the multimedia portal Planet.

Moneta mobile payment services are currently available at over 2,200 payment posts across Slovenia, while the number is increasing daily.Over 85,000 Mobitel subscribers have already taken advantage of Moneta mobile payment services and have performed over half a million transactions. Mobitel GSM/UMTS subscribers and Debitel subscribers have Moneta services activated free of charge, and they settle the cost of purchases as part of the unified bill for mobile telecommunications services, which provides a detailed itemization of purchases. The new generation of the service, which is presented today by Nova KBM and Mobitel under the joint brand Moneta, is introducing an important novelty – the option of settling the cost directly from the transactions accounts of Nova KBM clients. This enables mobile payment services to be available to Mobi prepaid users also, providing they are clients of Nova KBM. The option of higher payment limits related to the user’s transactions account represents another significant advantage of the new generation Moneta. Expanded and upgraded Moneta service is also becoming – in addition to the past cash-free payments settled at the charge of the user’s account with the mobile operator – a kind of a virtual debit card, enabling Nova KBM clients to settle their liabilities monthly directly from their transactions accounts. At the same time Moneta users also have a new, practical option: the same mobile phone now provides for payments made from various transactions accounts – be it personal, business, or accounts for the use of which the user is authorized. This enables, for example, business users to separate payments made for personal and business purposes without any trouble. Each individual Moneta mobile phone payment card is protected with a PIN code that is to be submitted at payments made at Moneta terminals, which improves the security level. Moneta cards may also be used with different mobile numbers. Moneta bank card is available to all Nova KBM clients, both natural persons and legal entities, upon a filled-in application submitted at the nearest Nova KBM bank. In their application the bank’s clients also need to state the payments limit they would like applied and choose the date of liability settlement (6th, 16th, or 26th of the month). The only condition is that they are Mobitel GSM/UMTS subscribers, Mobi prepaid users or Debitel subscribers.

This summer represents a period of testing phase in the introduction of the new generation Moneta services for Nova KBM and Mobitel. The service enables payments made at terminals and Moneta vending machines; before autumn users will also be able to make payments via Internet, and later also on Mobitel’s portal Planet and via M-vstopnica (M-Ticket). Nova KBM and Mobitel will also provide their users with the option of cash-free payments using mobile phones at all sales points within the upcoming Lent Festival. This will mark the companies’ public launch of joint Moneta service. The partners’ goal is M-Pay to become the national transactions centre for mobile payments, which will be joined by other banks and operators.
